Jade Fon Woo was a highly recognized Asian American watercolorist. Between the years 1940 and 1955, Jade Fon Woo himself worked as an entertainer at night clubs in San Francisco. This piece, entitled “Forbidden City Nightclub - Chinatown San Francisco,” portrays the exocitization of Asian American women in San Francisco’s Chinatown during the early 20th century. At the time, all ethnic casts and all white audiences dominated the club scene. These performances sometimes played up the “foreign” nature of the performers, but also placed them in traditionally white roles and moved them to perform culturally American acts, thus blurring the racial lines.
