The name of our exhibit is “Women in Print: Portrayals in Asian/American Art.” It explores the representation of Asian/American women within traditional and contemporary art. Our all-encompassing exhibit examined works with various perspectives on Asian/American women. We explore this topic through the lenses of both male and female artists from a variety of eras. Many of the works touch upon topics like navigating the Asian/American cultural rift, female objectification, and the societal expectations surrounding gender roles. Cai Jin’s piece, entitled “Banana,” shows the intersection of two cultures and their differing views on femininity by portraying traditional Chinese foot binding with Americanized high heels. In order to fully demonstrate the range of the Asian/American artistic landscape in regards to femininity, we also included works from Jade Fon Woo, a male watercolorist who depicted scenes of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the 1930s and beyond. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on their own identity and perspective of femininity, and observe the evolution of Asian/American arts.

Dimensions and Price:

Our exhibit would utilize two rooms of the Addison and would include one mural (80 x 160 inches) on one wall of one room with the other mural (66 x 66 inches) by the same artist, Hung Liu, on the opposite wall. On the last wall of this room that is not the entry into the next room would be the smaller Jade Fon Woo painting that is 22 x 30 inches. In the center of the room would be the sculpted form, bringing the traditional and modern aspects of this room together into one piece. In the inner room there would be the sculpture pieces "Banana" and "Floating World", requiring 5 feet of wall space for the first and about 81 square inches in area in the middle of the room to place three of Emma Sulkowicz's fishbowls. Finally, we will place the four panels of comics on 8 x 11 pieces of paper in frames on one wall together.

The cost to rent the Addison space will be free for us because we are students and future alumni. To rent and transport the artwork will be an estimated one to five thousand dollars, seeing as murals are big. Finally, for our opening we will require $300 for catering finger foods and mocktails.
